The Japanese Kanji characters are standardized into groups that are taught to Japanese school children during the 1st through the 9th grade.

The groups are defined and maintained by the Japanese Ministry for Education - although the list is designed for Japanese school children it is an excellent place where non-native speakers can begin to learn the most commonly used characters.
